The marketing to the internet can be a tricky business. You want a
clean and professional site that is compelling and that your customers
want to visit, so you create a gorgeous site, potentially at a great
cost to you and then you wait for the hits to come rolling in. And you
wait. And you wait. And you wonder, why isn’t anyone coming to my site?
It’s lovely, why doesn’t anyone see it? That’s when you realize that
without the right search engine marketing you may as well not even have a slick website.

Search engine marketing is all about getting your site to the top of
the list when a potential client does a search for whatever your site
is about. Getting to the top takes some know-how, some patience and
sometimes a little help. The first thing you need to determine is what
you would envision people searching for when they find you. Figure out
a few key words or phrases that you feel are the most relevant to your
site. Plug them into the major search engines, and see who pops up. Is
it you? If not, then you have some work to do!

To get a good idea of how your competitors got to the top, it is wise
to click on their links and visit their site. Check out their page.
What is the URL? Does it contain the keyword that you searched for?
That is one great search engine marketing trick to get traffic to your
site. How about the content on the page? Skim through it. Do you find
the keyword phrase mentioned several times throughout? Notice also any
links peppered throughout. You will find that many of the best rated
sites in the search engines often have link backs to other sites. And
you can bet that if they are linking to other sites, those other sites
are also linking back to them.

After you have checked out the sites that were in the top spots, go
back to your site and compare. How does it stack up? Does your URL
relate to the keyword or is it just a reflection of your brand? If not,
then you might want to purchase a domain that does. Set it up to
re-direct to your site. Check through your content. Does it follow any
of the search engine marketing tricks that your competitors are using?
If not, you have some work to do! The good news is, soon everyone else
will see how nice your site looks too!
