"Your body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to bring half a gallon of water to a boil." This assertion is misleading if not incorrect. At least it needs qualification. The statement would hold true if the human body providing the heat were working at an athletic level AND if the total content of heat produced were used. If only the sensible heat were taken into account, it would work for a quart of water more or less.
A half gallon of water weighs 4.17 lbs. (depending on temperature granted). To bring that water from room temperature (70F) to the boiling point (212F at sea level) will require about 592 BTUs. (To bring that water to a boil (convert it to vapor) would take an additional 4,045 BTUs, so let's assume just to the boiling point.
The adult human body can emit between 225 and 700 BTU's of sensible heat per hour (that heat which can affect temperature), the range dependent on activity, seated at rest to athletics in that range. Thus in 30 minutes at these levels of activity, only 113 to 350 BTU's would be produced. This would raise about a quart of water, if at temperature, to the boiling point.
If one includes latent heat (moisture from respiration and perspiration), these numbers increase from 330 to 1800 BTU's per hour. Realistically, latent heat would not show up as a rise in water temperature and the body with a basal temperature in the high 90's would not be hot enough to do this anyway, we all know. Reply...
